LEGIONELLA CONTROL
AND PREVENTION
Legionella is an environmental bacterium, whose optimal temperature for growth is between 35 and 37ºC and whose natural habitat is the water reservoirs, such as rivers, lakes, springs, hydrothermal vents and moist soils. The bacteria can also be found in artificial water circulation systems such as hot water circuits (showers), cold water circuits for human consumption, sprinkler irrigation, air conditioner and conduit filters, refrigeration systems, dehumidifiers, nebulizers and decorative fountains.
In this type of facility, water stagnation and accumulation of nutrient products for the bacteria, such as mud, organic matter, corrosion materials and amoebae, form a biolayer. This biolayer associated with a propitious temperature, allows the multiplication of Legionella to levels of contamination infectious to humans, by inhalation of air particles.
